Amy Stanek, of Sanford, Maine, has been named York County Community College’s Student of the Year. In addition to being recognized as Student of the Year, Amy has also received a John and Jana Lapoint Leadership Award in the amount of $1,000.
Amy is enrolled in both YCCC’s nursing program as well as the phlebotomy workforce training program. Amy previously worked both as a medical assistant and in the environmental services industry before taking time off to raise a family. When she decided to return to the medical field, she knew she wanted to be a nurse. As a full-time student and mom to two children, she says YCCC’s new nursing program is allowing her to reach her goals faster and easily.
“Amy has been an exceptional student in the first YCCC nursing cohort. She is excelling academically and beginning to think like a nurse. Amy is willing to work with others and help classmates in class, skills lab, and in clinical settings. She is so kind with patients.” said Lisa Gatti-Arnold, YCCC’s Nursing Department Chair and Nursing Faculty.
Additionally, Amy is a member of the Student Senate and Nursing Club and competes for YCCC on both the cross country and track and field teams, where she was recognized as a YSCC Cross Country All-Conference member as well as a YSCC Academic All-Conference award winner. She set the indoor track record for both the 1-mile as well as the 3000-m run. She is exploring her career options as a nurse and plans to graduate in May 2024.
“Amy is a wonderful example of a hardworking, dedicated, and truly motivated student who wants to make the most of this college experience. She is truly deserving of this honor.” D. Jennifer Laney, YCCC’s Dean of Students
